The Value of Cross Discipline

Going into discussion about CityBlock the group quickly learned that it demanded separate disciplines coming together to brainstorm and design together. The class was split between communication design (graphic design) and interior design students with a variety of specializations including branding, illustration, and sustainable design. These cross disciplines became essential in the large scope of planning CityBlock. All areas of study brought something new to the table. Both disciplines dominated in their specific areas of study but it was their experimentation and exploration in the areas outside their comfort zones (graphic illustration for interior designers, and building design and space planning for the communication designers) that brought a clearly defined sense of collaboration and community to the group and the project.

Interior design was equally as important. Having a background in interior design was the source for the group's knowledge of sustainable strategies and future trends regarding both design and sustainability. Other contributions from the interior design students included their ability to create digital models of the block, to use structural knowledge and research to make realistic conclusions from fanciful ideas, and sharing a wealth of knowledge pertaining to buildings materials and systems.
